Bill Coors, one of the founders of the Adolph Coors Foundation and a giant in the beer industry, was also very passionate about holistic and non-traditional medical practices. In 2011, Bill and his wife generously donated $10 million to the Adolph Coors Foundation in support of work to advance evidence-based research in integrative medicine.

One-third of American adults suffer from hypertension, a significant risk factor for heart disease. Of those, half do not have their blood pressure properly controlled by conventional drugs. The Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute at UC Irvine is home to the Bill Coors Protocol which utilizes electroacupuncture treatment as an alternative to those patients who are frustrated by the ineffectiveness and/or side effects of conventional medicine. Now, in its fifth and final year, the Coors Study results are promising, have led to several articles and presentations, as well as, provided preliminary data that helped secure National Institute of Health funding.
